The Board of Directors of the Summer Institute of Church Music (SICM) made the difficult decision to suspend its July 2023 conference at its June meeting due to insufficient enrolment.
The non-profit organization has been offering a transformative one-week professional development program for church musicians, clergy, worship leaders and choristers in July for 53 years.
“While we regret that we are unable to offer the excellent program that we had planned for this year, we are proud of our work which included a survey of our membership, and the planning of a two-site program in Whitby and Edmonton as well as online,” said Gordon Adnams, Chair of the SICM Board. “The Board is committed to returning in 2024 with the excellent and world class instruction that we are known for, after a time of reviewing our mission in a time of change and reality checks for Canadian churches.”
“A banquet of professional development programs are being offered by a number of well-respected organizations this summer,” he added. “We wish our community and supporters success with their conferences and look forward to participating in them ourselves.”
Members of the Board of Directors have been in touch with all business partners, registrants, and sponsors to address any concerns.
